It was gathered that residents of Ifelodun Street, Oke-Ira, Ogba (behind Yaya Abatan, Ogba) were rendered homeless after bulldozers heavily guarded by armed men including mobile police and men of the Civil Defence Corps stormed the area pulling down their houses.

According to a displaced resident, Mr. Sunday Unah we were only given 48 hours to vacate the communityunfortunately they stormed the community with their bulldozer and pulled down our houses”.

Lamenting a resident, Adefolu Tobi said “where do they want us to go to at a time like this when there is a total lockdown because of Coronavirus. See how the government is compounding our suffering at a time like this. Last week, the famous Dustbin Estate was razed to the ground through a mysterious fire outbreak reminiscent of many of such in the past and rendering thousands of residents homeless. This week it is the turn of Ifelodun street inhabited by the struggling poor of a state”.

Another resident in her sixties, Regina James, was in her house and on a drip due to ill-health when the demolition squad appeared. She had to be taken outside with the drip still attached.

It was also learned that the few houses standing either have their foundations so badly dug into they may cave in any moment from now, or have heaps of excavated toxic wastes dumped in front of them such that they can’t move in or out of their houses. And that is in addition to inhaling the toxic wastes.

Calling on the Lagos State Governor, Sanwo-Olu, to please halt the demolition, a nursing mother Bukola Saheed said it is not only inhuman but disgraceful in the sight of a world cowering from the impacts of a global pandemic. This action leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of any decent human that the state with the highest (and rapidly growing rate of COVID19, would prioritise the demolition of the houses of poor residents over attending to the screaming needs of the struggling masses, most of whom are languishing in lockdown-induced hunger.

Meanwhile the Lagos State Government, on Wednesday, said it is suspending the on-going demolition of illegal structures on drainage alignments from Yaya Abatan to Obawole in Ogba area of Lagos State.

According to the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources in the State, Mr. Tunji Bello, the temporary suspension was in view of the need to effectively curb the Coronavirus pandemic in Lagos.

Bello said the demolition exercise was duly approved in February, 2020 after several contravention notices had been issued to owners and occupiers of the structures, asserting that the exercise is part of the wholesome clearing and cleaning of drainage channels and alignments by the State Government in readiness for the rainy season.

Attributing the suspension of the exercise to the ravaging Coronavirus disease, Bello affirmed the need to comply with the stipulated guidelines issued by the Government and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The Commissioner maintained that the exercise will be revisited by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources after a successful containment of the COVID-19 pandemic.
