Life lessons from Saint Valentine

February 14 every year is usually celebrated as Valentine’s day. I am sure many of us wore either red and white or a touch of red to school that day. It is also called Saint Valentine’s Day.

On Valentine’s day people greet loved ones, close friends, family members, and classmates and try to spread love in different ways. Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to show appreciation for people we love and generally, to others around us. There are many theories as to how Valentine’s day began.

However, there was a Catholic priest named Valentine who did something great and the Catholic Church made him a saint after he died. History has it that he died on February 14 (Read our short story below to know a bit about St Valentine).

There are a lot of lessons to be learnt from the life of St Valentine? First of all, we should learn to help others. St Valentine helped people in his community while he was alive especially the people who could not help themselves. It is our duty to help the weak and downtrodden.

Also, we can learn that love is courageous. Despite marriages being outlawed in ancient Rome, under the Emperor Claudius’s rule, Valentine performed marriages for couples around him.

We have to be courageous when we believe in something and know that it is the right thing. Love is kind. When Valentine was sentenced to jail, he agreed to tutor a blind girl named Julia who was the daughter of the jailer. He chose to become friends with the man who sentenced him to prison, thus, choosing kindness over bitterness.

This is a very important lesson for us. We should learn to be kind to people, even if they hurt us. It is not usually easy but we can try.

Finally, we can also learn that love reigns forever. Living in a society that persecuted Christians, Valentine’s open devotion to Jesus Christ was dangerous.

On February 14, 270 AD, Valentine was killed for refusing to renounce his faith and worship the Roman gods instead and he was beaten and stoned first, and then beheaded. Hatred is not a good thing so when we love, it should be forever. We shouldn’t allow hate grow in our hearts.

Dear children, love is patient and kind, love does not envy or boast, love is not arrogant or rude, love doesn’t insist on its own way. Love bears all things, believes in all things and endures all things. One must be kind to everyone and spread love rather than hate.
Just like Valentine, we must also have faith in love, work towards the betterment of people in general and not be selfish. Be it family, children, relatives or friends, equal love should be given to all in order to live in peace and harmony

So,  in this valentine season and beyond, learn to spread love and not hate. I hope you have been enjoying our kiddies chat? Is there something you would like me to write about? Do send me an email about it.
