IWD: Women demand freedom from societal limitations

In commemoration of the 2020 International women’s day, some Nigerian women have called on their fellow women to stand up for gender equality and women’s rights.

A music artiste, Nifemi Oluwadeji, advises that ‘Women should not endure domestic violence; marriage is not by force. They should walk out of abusive relationships, it is not the end of the world. They should also be outspoken when experiencing cases of domestic violence as there are people and organisations willing to listen to them, even the government can intervene in their matter. Women should also realise that they have rights, they should not allow themselves to be oppressed.”

Bukola Fidelis, a Para-legal Officer with WARDC insists on having more women representation in politics. “For instance, Senator Oluremi Tinubu is very impactful and she is a woman who paves the way for other women to climb the political ladder in Lagos state”.

For Dr. Emilia Ezude, President of Women in Politics Inter-party, “Women need to be strong, they need to realise that the society is not so favourable to women, so they need to be strong and also financially independent for them to be able to take a stand to face the society”.

Executive Director, Virgins Pride Network, Nkechi Odebiyi says “women should train their children for a better society. The perpetrators of domestic violence come from homes. Some parents neglect to inculcate some basic values in their children with the belief that they will grow up to find their way. When parents fail to train their children, those kids learn the wrong way and from the wrong sources and later in life they become disoriented adults”.
