Abule Ado Explosion: death toll increases to 15… 50 buildings destroyed, 200 residents displaced

Fifteen person have been confirmed dead while 200 residents have become homeless as explosion destroys 50 building including Bethlehem International Catholic School in Abule Ado community on Sunday morning.

The incident which occurred at about 9am, in front of Bethlehem International Catholic School, according to residents of the area is more than a pipeline explosion.

Akinwale, a Civil Defence operative, who spoke with our reporter at the scene said, “I can swear with my life this is no pipeline explosion. I have seen lots of pipeline explosions but I have not seen anything like this. The blast woke me up in my house in Abule Ado. Can’t you see that these vehicles were not burnt, they were squeezed by the impact of the explosion?

Another resident, Uzoma Phil, said that “I was in my house down Abule Ado, when it happened. Sincerely I thought the world had come to an end because the way everywhere was vibrating. Glasses of our building shattered and the roofing sheets destroyed. The government needs to investigate this explosion because it seems like a planned attack.

It was gathered that the Reverend father and the religious who were celebrating Mass when the explosion occurred were rescued from the debris, unfortunately Rev Sister Henrietta who is the Principal of the School died on her the way to Navy Hospital.

Apart from the truck that was burnt, other vehicles within the scene were compressed and squeezed like dry leaves.

At the moment, the number of casualties has risen to fifteen even as rescue operatives are trying to rescue those still trapped in the debris of some collapsed buildings.
