Lockdown: Corps members donate food items to communities in Lagos

Some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Lagos has made donations of food items to the Onigbongbo and Oregun communities as their contribution to the fight against Coronavirus disease.

Community Bell reports that the corps members were received by Mr Babatunde Oke, the Chairman, Onigbongbo Local Council Development Areas, who expressed gratitude to their efforts.

Oke said that he was excited about their initiatives, especially in supporting the community in providing palliatives to ease the people’s situation in this period of lockdown.

He said they have shown good character and that it was a unique idea and that he was so proud that this was happening in his own community.

“This is a noble deed that would stay along period in our hearts in the Onigbongbo community and in Oregun as well.

“The corps members have done well indeed and have shown that they are receiving the right training from the NYSC programme.

“I want to use the opportunity to call on other well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to come and throw their support and ease the pains and sufferings of people in this period,’’ Oke said.

Similarly, the NYSC Lagos coordinator, Mr Edwin Megwa, said that he was proud of the development as they have shown good citizenship in alleviating the suffering of others.

“I am very proud of these corps members who have dipped their hands in their own pockets to support the community they serve, indeed it is a noteworthy character.

“They could have been somewhere else but they decided to come together and showcase their passion for the people in the community in which they have been called to serve,’’ Megwa said.

Receiving the food items at the Palace of Oba Munirudeen Yussuf, the Awushe of Onigbongbo Land, Mr Tajudeen Olugbayo, the Ekeran of Onigbongbo said that he was delighted about the development.

He said that it was not expected, especially coming from corps members, who could have used their money to do other things.

He said that the gesture would not be forgotten in a long time in Onigbongbo land.

Similarly, Oluwadamilola Oluyera, who spoke on behalf of the corps members, said that they felt the need to support the community because of the lockdown challenges.

She said that they had to task themselves financially to buy the food items to show their own support.

The food items include Beans, Garri, Tomatoes, groundnut oil, Salt and Sugar, all well packed in over 300 bags.
