Four arrested for Child trafficking in Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested four suspects for trafficking a month old baby in Lagos.

The suspects were apprehended on April 26th, when police officers attached to Anthony Division, on enforcement duty at Anthony Oke pin down point intercepted a Toyota Sienna SUV carrying 7 passengers.

Among the suspects were two police officers identified as Patrick Mbama (41) and Ogechi Chinonso Ekwebele travelling together with a baby of about a month old, suspected to be stolen.

It was gathered that the duo was coming from Orlu, Imo State. While the other occupants of the vehicle were arrested for violating the ban on interstates travel and the vehicle is impounded.

During interrogation, Patrick Mbama and Ogechi Chinonso Ekwebele claimed that a childless man and wife in Lagos had paid for the said baby, their confession led to the arrest of the childless couple who ordered for the baby, namely: Izuchukwu Okafor aged 51 years, from Oraifite, Imo state and his wife Cecilia Okafor aged 41 years.

Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson Lagos State Police Command, DSP Bala Elkana said that “the name of the child’s parent as contained in the birth certificate recovered is that of the buyers. The Baby’s date of birth is March 23, 2020. The biological parents of the Baby have been traced. The Baby will today be handed over to them.

Meanwhile, the suspects will be charged to Court”
