Beyond physical appearance, pupils, students should be mentally ready for school’ -Udoffia

With the end of the holidays in sight, most schools resume next week. There are lots of things parents need to put in place for their children. Often times, these things are forgotten during the holiday and then students resume haphazardly or unprepared for resumption. In this chat with UGOCHI MBA, Mary Udoffia, a teacher and preschool educator speaks on things parents should do to ensure that their children resume school prepared.

Do pupils look forward to holidays?
Yes they do. They enjoy holidays a lot.
Are the pupils usually excited when they resume from any holiday?
Most are usually excited, while the others are not. The excited ones are happy seeing their friends and teachers after some time while the other ones feel bad because school means early rising, Mathematics (or any subject they don’t enjoy) and homework time.
What’s your take on pupils’ physical and general appearance when they resume school after any holiday?
In most cases, the children are ready for school work with homework done and stationeries for school work intact. Although a handful of them will still come with their ‘Christmas hair’ and homework undone, usually with excuses. A large percentage resume neat and smart. You know there is a healthy competition in schools these days. No parent wants to be found wanting, so they all try to make their children look good while sometimes, they even forget to do the homework which is equally important.
Do you think the commendation or condemnation for child’s appearance should go to the parents or to the pupil?
Both commendation and condemnation should go to the parents. A pupil has little influence on to prepare for school especially in getting needed school materials, doing homework and buying the needed items. I believe parents should be deeply involved in their children and wards education .
What do you think can be done to improve on this?
I think parents should do better in all areas when preparing the child for resumption. Setting priorities will help a lot here. They should try and adhere to the school’s instruction. They can also set timetable and reminder to help with the homework and also help in school preparation so that they don’t miss out on anything.
What should parents look out for especially as they prepare their kids’ for resumption?
I think parents should look beyond the physical appearance and also consider the mental readiness. This is not to say that physical appearance is not necessary. It is equally as important as the mental preparation. They should ask questions like; Are you excited about resuming school ? What do you expect from school this term/session? What do you expect from me this time around? Are you excited to see your teachers?
What’s your advice to parents, as pupils resume school in the coming weeks?
My advice to parents is to be available to their children. To make sure that their children are really happy being in school. Also, to provide listening ears to their children’s daily school tales. It’s a way to bond with the children and also know what is going on in their lives and if anything bad is happening. Parents should also try and work hand in hand with the teachers to get better results this time around. Both parties should find a neutral ground to relate for the progress of the child/ children.
What are those basic essentials a pupil needs as school resumes in a few weeks time?
School materials and learning items should be duly provided. Neat and smart uniforms. Hair extensions should be put away to avoid play accidents and distractions. All utensils for eating should be ready. Shoes and socks should be in good condition. The child should be ready for school mentally, physically, psychologically.
